About this site
Spanning 27,000 acres from Sandy Hook in New Jersey to Breezy Point in New York City, the park is both the gateway from the ocean into New York Harbor, and the gateway to the National Park Service for millions of visitors every year. Gateway offers green spaces and beaches alongside historic structures and cultural landscapes. Every day, Gateway is open for you to explore, envision, and enjoy! Jacob Riis Park was designed by New York City as a park in 1912. Its famous bathhouse was built in 1932. Jacob Riis Park became part of the National Park Service when Gateway was established in 1972. Lifeguards are on duty at this swimming beach daily between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day from 10 am to 6 pm.
