It's not glamorous, but everyone needs to know how to handle bathroom needs in the backcountry.

Campground Facilities

Types

• Flush toilets: Like home
• Vault toilets: No water, chemical treatment
• Pit toilets: Basic hole in ground

Etiquette

• If it smells, close the lid
• Don't throw trash in vault toilets
• Bring your own toilet paper (often out)
• Hand sanitizer recommended

Catholes (Solid Waste)

1. Find spot 200+ feet from water, trail, camp
2. Dig hole 6-8 inches deep
3. Do your business
4. Cover and disguise

Liquid Waste

• 200 feet from water sources
• On durable surfaces when possible
• Dilute and spread (don't create puddles)

Special Environments

• Alpine: Pack out everything
• Desert: Same as above
• Snow: Dig to ground or pack out

• Opaque bags for discretion
• Consider menstrual cup for backpacking
• Bring extra supplies
