Campfire Safety: Enjoy Responsibly
Campfires are a camping highlight, but they're also the leading cause of human-started wildfires. Here's how to enjoy them responsibly.
Before You Start
Check Regulations
- Fire bans may be in effect
- Some areas require permits
- Restrictions vary by conditions
- Check with rangers or online
Choose Your Location
- Use existing fire rings when available
- Clear area of debris (10ft radius)
- Away from overhanging branches
- Away from tent (sparks travel)
Building a Safe Fire
Gather Materials
- Tinder: Dry leaves, small twigs, paper
- Kindling: Pencil-sized sticks
- Fuel: Wrist-sized or smaller wood
Building
- Start small with tinder
- Add kindling gradually
- Build up to larger fuel
- Keep fire small and manageable
Fire Maintenance
During Use
- Never leave unattended
- Keep water or shovel nearby
- Don't throw anything unexpected in
- Control with size, not accelerants
Extinguishing (Drown, Stir, Feel)
- Drown: Pour water on fire
- Stir: Mix ashes and embers
- Repeat: More water, more stirring
- Feel: Cold to touch = done
Emergency Response
If fire escapes:
- Call 911 immediately
- Alert nearby campers
- Attempt to contain if safe
- Evacuate if necessary
Alternatives to Campfires
- Camp stove for cooking
- Battery lanterns for light
- Dress warmly for heat
- Enjoy the stars without light pollution
Stay safe, stay responsible! π₯
